What’s the real impact of AI in Software Development

AI in software development is becoming the new normal for engineering teams. It’s built into IDEs, pops up in pull requests, reviews code, and even writes tests. But between all the hype and the real world, there’s still one question bothering a lot of people: what’s actually changing in the day-to-day of someone who writes code?

It suggests code, writes docs, explains functions. Stuff that used to take time and attention is now just an autocomplete. But it’s not about what it can do anymore — it’s about how it’s changing the daily flow of teams, the way we ship, and the role of the developer.

AI handles the boring stuff. But what about the stuff that matters?

It takes care of the classic friction points: boilerplate, docs, repetitive unit tests, improvement suggestions during code review. These wins show up in the latest DORA report on AI adoption in engineering teams:

  • More time in flow (+2.6%)
  • Higher satisfaction (+2.2%)
  • Less burnout (-2.6%)

That’s a big upgrade for the dev experience, especially for the repetitive tasks that used to slow things down.

But the report also shows something else: time spent on what devs consider valuable work actually dropped (-0.6%). Why? Because AI speeds up execution so much that it removes some of the mental effort. And for people who like to go deep and really solve problems, that hits differently.

A lot of devs say the same thing: they finish a task faster than expected, but without that “I figured it out” feeling. AI gets it done, but doesn’t always engage. It gives you answers, but doesn’t teach. This hits harder for experienced devs who care about technical autonomy and constant learning.

Double the code, double the problems

AI made code production faster. But it’s not leading to better delivery. DORA shows stability dropped 7.2% and throughput, 1.5%. Sounds weird, but makes total sense.

More code doesn’t mean better code. AI makes it cheaper to try out ideas, so people make bigger changes. But big PRs are harder to review, more likely to have bugs, and harder to deploy safely.

Now it’s normal to see PRs with 20 changed files, half written by AI, minimal testing, and barely reviewed. That kills the flow. What used to be continuous delivery is turning into massive batches.

Also, since it’s easier to generate solutions, it’s more common to patch symptoms instead of fixing root causes. Cosmetic refactors, new functions where just reworking the logic would do, early generalization. Technical debt keeps growing, but now it looks like productivity.

AI only works if the basics are in place

In teams with weak processes, AI just multiplies the mess. Untested code, shallow reviews, manual deploys, rushed technical decisions — all of that gets worse when you crank up code generation without changing the context.

AI will suggest what seems right, but it doesn’t know your business rules, internal standards, or system architecture. So either the dev fixes it manually, or it slips through. And when it slips, the damage is invisible until it breaks something.

Now, in teams with a solid pipeline, good review habits, and a learning culture, AI helps a lot. It handles the obvious, saves time, and suggests alternatives. It frees up time to work on things that need real thinking and team discussion. The thing is: AI doesn’t improve the team — it amplifies what the team already does.

The dev role changed. Not everyone noticed

Before, what made you stand out was writing great code. Now, it’s about knowing what’s worth writing. And that changes how people get recognized — inside and outside the company.

If you’re still measuring impact by code complexity or number of lines, you’re fading out. AI handles that part well. What’s left is judgment, clarity, product-tech alignment, maintaining what’s already in place — and that doesn’t shine like a shiny new feature.

DORA lists five value dimensions in dev work: real impact, recognition, market value, learning, and joy. AI affects them all. It can boost, but also blur. Especially for those who like to go deep, explore different paths, or build from scratch.

Good teams take the win

The data shows the biggest gains happen in environments with clear processes:

  • +7.5% in doc quality
  • +3.4% in code quality
  • +3.1% in review speed

These teams use AI to fast-track stuff they already do well. It drafts docs, writes basic tests, suggests code improvements. That only works because the team knows how to review, tweak, adjust, and fix.

Teams that are rushed, misaligned, and process-light end up turning AI into a crutch. It feels like they’re moving faster. But they’re just heading straight toward rework.

AI only works where there’s space to test and tweak

AI works better where there’s room to experiment. The data backs this up:

  • Teams with time set aside to learn AI: +131% adoption
  • Teams with a clear usage policy: +451% adoption
  • Teams that openly talk about concerns: +125% in trust

It’s not about writing better prompts. It’s about having the space to use it, see where it helps, and tweak it for the team’s reality. Leaders need to create that space. Otherwise, AI turns into just another feature nobody uses right.

So now that AI took care of the boring stuff…

AI cleared a lot of tasks no one wanted to do. Now there’s more time. But time with no direction turns into noise: more meetings, more pressure, more rushing.

The real challenge now is using that time for what really matters: improve the architecture, refactor properly, actually review code, think about how to scale without locking the team into complexity. AI created the space — but it won’t tell you what to do with it.
